We are often asked by our clients what significance the bells have. First we give them the biblical answer and only afterwards we tell them what could these works of artmeantothem. What can be more beautiful than seeing your name on a bell after years and years, bell on which so much toil and skillful work had been put in and be able to leave something to those who will come.
The first writings about bells and their use with a church purpose, modern, take place in the VIIth century and the first one to use them was the Romanian priest Sabinian. Then, the two empires of the Sunset and Dawn used them and in the VIIIth century, bells of high tonnage and with different inscriptions on them were already being casted.
The bells were used toannounce war, fires, floods, plague, to proclaim victory in battle and to proclaim peace, being an item of people’s communities. People could be gathered with a few tolls without too much effort. People nowadays often hear the tolls of bells, at fixed hours of before going to church. The sound of bells is announcing that the priest arrived at the church and he is preparing the Sacrament of the Divine Liturgy.
I was saying at first about the name that remains on the bell. Especially on large bells, the founders are recorded, the priest under which the bell was forged and the biblical passages which bring exaltation to the Holy Trinity, the year can also be written and the company that forged it. Thus over hundreds of years anyone can find out who donated it, under which priest and who made it, remaining a simple item of history and patrimony for the generations that will come.
